Types of hearing aids

Hearing aids come in several distinct styles, each with different trade-offs between power, discretion, comfort, and features. The right style depends on your degree of hearing loss, ear anatomy, dexterity, and lifestyle priorities.

Behind-the-ear (BTE)

The processor and battery sit in a curved case behind the ear. Sound travels through a thin tube to an earmold or dome in the ear canal.

  • Best for: Mild to profound hearing loss; children (the case is easy to replace as the child grows); users with dexterity challenges
  • Pros: Most powerful style; easy to handle; accommodates all battery types; durable
  • Cons: Most visible style; can be uncomfortable with glasses; tube requires periodic replacement
  • Typical cost: $1,500–$7,000 per pair (prescription)

Receiver-in-canal (RIC) / Receiver-in-the-ear (RITE)

Similar to BTE, but the speaker (receiver) is placed in the ear canal rather than in the behind-the-ear case. A thin wire connects the two components. This is the most popular hearing aid style worldwide.

  • Best for: Mild to severe hearing loss; most adults; users who want a balance of discretion and power
  • Pros: More discreet than BTE; better sound quality (receiver closer to eardrum); comfortable; easy to fit; most OTC aids use this style
  • Cons: Receiver in ear canal is susceptible to earwax and moisture damage; slightly less powerful than BTE for the same size
  • Typical cost: $1,500–$7,500 per pair (prescription); $200–$1,600 (OTC)

In-the-ear (ITE)

The entire device — processor, battery, and speaker — fits in a custom-molded shell that fills the outer ear (concha). Larger than ITC or CIC styles.

  • Best for: Mild to severe hearing loss; users with dexterity challenges (larger size is easier to handle); users who want volume controls on the device
  • Pros: Easier to handle than smaller styles; can accommodate larger batteries; directional microphones possible
  • Cons: Visible; custom fit required (longer lead time); susceptible to earwax; may feel "plugged up"
  • Typical cost: $2,000–$6,500 per pair

In-the-canal (ITC)

Smaller than ITE, fitting partially in the ear canal with a small portion visible in the outer ear. Custom-molded.

  • Best for: Mild to moderately-severe hearing loss; users who want more discretion than ITE
  • Pros: More discreet than ITE; custom fit; some models have directional microphones
  • Cons: Smaller battery (shorter life); harder to handle; limited features compared to larger styles
  • Typical cost: $2,000–$6,500 per pair

Completely-in-canal (CIC)

Fits almost entirely inside the ear canal, with only a small removal handle visible. Custom-molded to the individual ear canal.

  • Best for: Mild to moderate hearing loss; users who prioritize discretion above all else
  • Pros: Very discreet; natural sound localization (microphone near eardrum); reduced wind noise
  • Cons: Very small — difficult to handle; smallest battery (shortest life, no rechargeable option in most models); no directional microphones; no Bluetooth in most models; susceptible to earwax and moisture
  • Typical cost: $2,500–$7,000 per pair

Invisible-in-canal (IIC)

The smallest hearing aid style, sitting deep in the second bend of the ear canal and completely invisible when worn. Custom-molded.

  • Best for: Mild to moderate hearing loss; users for whom invisibility is the top priority
  • Pros: Truly invisible; excellent sound quality from deep placement; reduced occlusion effect
  • Cons: Requires suitable ear canal anatomy (not everyone qualifies); very small — difficult to handle; no Bluetooth; no directional microphones; shortest battery life; must be removed daily (not suitable for extended wear)
  • Typical cost: $3,000–$8,000 per pair

Extended-wear (Lyric)

Phonak's Lyric is a subscription-based hearing aid worn continuously for 2–3 months without removal — including during sleep and showering. Placed deep in the ear canal by an audiologist.

  • Best for: Mild to moderate hearing loss; users who want a completely maintenance-free experience
  • Pros: Completely invisible; no daily insertion/removal; no batteries to change; natural sound quality
  • Cons: Subscription model (~$3,000–$4,000/year); requires compatible ear canal anatomy; not suitable for active water sports; audiologist visits required for replacement

Choosing the right style

The right style depends on several factors working together:

  • Degree of loss: Severe to profound loss typically requires BTE or RIC for sufficient power
  • Ear anatomy: Small or unusually shaped ear canals may not accommodate CIC or IIC styles
  • Dexterity: Arthritis or reduced fine motor control favors larger styles (BTE, ITE) or rechargeable RIC
  • Lifestyle: Active users may prefer the durability of RIC or BTE; those in professional settings may prioritize discretion
  • Features needed: Bluetooth streaming and rechargeable batteries are most available in RIC and BTE styles
  • Budget: OTC RIC aids offer the best value for mild to moderate loss
