What Bluetooth does in a hearing aid
Bluetooth in hearing aids enables several distinct functions:
- Phone call streaming: Calls route directly to your hearing aids. You hear the caller in both ears, and the hearing aids' microphones pick up your voice. This is dramatically clearer than holding a phone to an ear with hearing loss.
- Music and media streaming: Audio from your phone, tablet, or computer streams directly to your aids — no earbuds needed.
- TV streaming: With a TV adapter (sold separately by most brands), your TV audio streams directly to your aids at your preferred volume without affecting others in the room.
- App control: The companion app communicates with the aids via Bluetooth to adjust settings, run the hearing test, and update firmware.
- Remote microphone: Some systems allow a companion microphone to stream a speaker's voice directly to your aids — useful in lectures, restaurants, or meetings.
Bluetooth protocols: what the specs mean
Classic Bluetooth (Bluetooth Classic)
Older protocol, higher power consumption. Less common in modern hearing aids.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE / Bluetooth LE)
The standard for modern hearing aids. Lower power consumption extends battery life. Used for app communication and, increasingly, for audio streaming.
Made for iPhone (MFi)
Apple's proprietary protocol for direct audio streaming to hearing aids from iPhones and iPads. Offers low latency and high audio quality. Requires Apple devices — does not work with Android.
ASHA (Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids)
Google's equivalent of MFi for Android devices. Supported on Android 10+ with compatible hardware. Growing in adoption among OTC hearing aid manufacturers.
Auracast (Bluetooth LE Audio)
The newest standard, enabling broadcast audio — one source streaming to many devices simultaneously. Increasingly supported in public venues (airports, theaters). Some newer OTC aids support Auracast.
Best Bluetooth OTC hearing aids
Sony CRE-E10 — best overall Bluetooth
Supports both MFi (iPhone) and ASHA (Android). Seamless streaming with low latency. The earbud-style design makes it feel natural for streaming use.
Jabra Enhance Plus — best for calls
Excellent microphone quality for hands-free calls. Supports both iOS and Android. The earbud form factor is optimized for communication.
Lexie B2 — solid mid-range Bluetooth
Good Bluetooth performance at a competitive price. Supports iOS and Android streaming.
OTC aids without Bluetooth
Not all OTC aids have Bluetooth. Budget devices (Audien, MDHearing) typically do not. Eargo's completely-in-canal devices sacrifice Bluetooth for invisibility. If streaming is important to you, verify Bluetooth support before purchasing — it is not universal in the OTC category.
Practical tips for Bluetooth hearing aids
- Battery impact: Bluetooth streaming uses more power. Expect 20–30% shorter battery life when streaming continuously.
- Latency: Some Bluetooth protocols have noticeable audio delay when watching video. MFi and ASHA have lower latency than older protocols.
- Connection stability: Keep your phone within 30 feet for reliable streaming. Walls and interference can cause dropouts.
- Pairing: Most aids pair like wireless earbuds — open the case near your phone and follow the app instructions. Re-pairing is rarely needed.
- TV adapters: If TV streaming is important, check whether the brand sells a compatible TV adapter and factor that cost in (~$100–$200).
