4D Sensor: the key innovation

The 4D Sensor is the defining feature of the Oticon Intent. It combines four motion sensors — accelerometers and gyroscopes — that detect your head movements in real time. The hearing aid uses this motion data to infer your listening intent: are you turning toward a speaker? Nodding in conversation? Looking away from a noise source?

Based on this intent detection, the hearing aid automatically adjusts its directional microphone focus. If you turn your head toward a speaker, the system increases focus on that direction. If you're in a quiet environment and moving around freely, it opens up the soundscape to give you full 360-degree awareness.

This is a fundamentally different approach from traditional automatic hearing aids, which adjust based on acoustic analysis alone. The Intent adds a behavioral dimension — what you're doing physically — to the adjustment algorithm.

Deep Neural Network (DNN)

Oticon's Deep Neural Network has been a feature of their premium hearing aids since the More (2021). The DNN was trained on 12 million real-world sound scenes and runs continuously in the hearing aid to separate speech from noise at the signal level — before the sound reaches the amplification stage.

The Intent uses an updated version of the DNN that processes 500 million operations per second. The result is exceptionally natural sound quality — many users describe Oticon's sound as the most "open" and least processed-sounding of any hearing aid brand, which is a deliberate design philosophy (Oticon calls it "BrainHearing").

Oticon's BrainHearing philosophy

Oticon takes a different approach to hearing aid design than most competitors. Rather than aggressively suppressing background noise to focus on speech, Oticon's BrainHearing philosophy aims to deliver a full, balanced soundscape that gives the brain the information it needs to do its own filtering.

The rationale is neurological: the brain is better at separating speech from noise than any algorithm, but only if it receives sufficient acoustic information. Over-processed hearing aids that strip out background noise may make speech easier to hear in the short term but deprive the brain of the context it needs for natural listening.

In practice, some users love this approach (they describe the sound as natural and effortless) while others prefer the more aggressive noise reduction of competitors like Phonak. This is worth discussing with your audiologist and testing in a trial period.

Bluetooth and connectivity

The Intent supports Bluetooth LE Audio, which provides lower latency and better audio quality than classic Bluetooth. It streams directly from iPhone and Android devices and supports hands-free calling. The Oticon ON app provides volume control, program selection, and access to remote fine-tuning.
