Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids

BTE hearing aids house all electronics in a casing that sits behind the ear, delivering sound into the ear canal through a thin tube and custom earmold. They're the most powerful and durable style available.

How BTE hearing aids work

The main body of a BTE aid — containing the microphones, processor, battery, and controls — hooks over the top of the outer ear and rests behind it. Sound is processed in the body and transmitted through a thin plastic tube into a custom-made earmold that sits in the ear canal.

Some BTE aids use an "open fit" design with a thin tube and a small dome tip instead of a full earmold. This allows low-frequency sounds to pass naturally into the ear while the aid amplifies higher frequencies — a good option for people with normal low-frequency hearing.

Who BTE hearing aids are best for

  • Severe to profound hearing loss — BTE aids can deliver more power than any other style
  • Children — the behind-ear body is easy to adjust as ears grow, and earmolds can be replaced without replacing the whole aid
  • People with dexterity challenges — larger controls and batteries are easier to handle
  • People with chronic ear drainage — keeping electronics out of the ear canal reduces moisture damage
  • Those who need telecoil (T-coil) — BTE aids more commonly include telecoil than smaller styles

Pros of BTE hearing aids

  • Most powerful amplification available — suitable for all degrees of hearing loss
  • Longer battery life (larger battery compartment)
  • More durable — electronics stay dry, away from ear canal moisture
  • Easier to handle and adjust
  • Earmolds can be replaced or remade without replacing the aid
  • More likely to include telecoil and other advanced features

Cons of BTE hearing aids

  • More visible than ITE or RIC styles
  • Can feel bulky, especially with glasses
  • Tube can collect moisture and require regular cleaning
  • Wind noise can be more noticeable with behind-ear microphones

BTE vs. RIC: what's the difference?

Receiver-in-canal (RIC) aids look similar to BTE aids but move the receiver (speaker) from the body into the ear canal. This makes RIC aids smaller, reduces the occlusion effect, and improves sound quality for many wearers. However, the in-canal receiver is more exposed to moisture and earwax, requiring more maintenance.

For most adults with mild-to-severe hearing loss, RIC aids have largely replaced traditional BTE aids. BTE remains the preferred choice for profound loss, children, and situations where maximum durability is needed.

Price range

BTE hearing aids range from approximately $1,500 to $7,000 per pair for prescription devices. OTC BTE-style aids are less common but available from some brands. The price reflects the technology tier, not the style — a premium BTE costs the same as a premium RIC from the same manufacturer.
