Disposable zinc-air batteries
Traditional hearing aids use zinc-air batteries — small button cells that are activated by removing a protective tab that exposes the battery to air. Once activated, the battery cannot be deactivated. Zinc-air batteries come in four standard sizes, color-coded for easy identification:

Tips for disposable batteries
- Wait 1–2 minutes after removing the tab before inserting the battery. This allows the zinc-air reaction to fully activate and extends battery life by up to 30%.
- Store at room temperature. Heat and humidity degrade batteries. Do not store in the bathroom or car.
- Keep the tab on until you are ready to use the battery — once removed, the battery begins discharging.
- Open the battery door at night when not wearing the aids. This extends battery life and allows moisture to escape.
- Buy in bulk from warehouse stores or online — per-battery cost drops significantly with volume purchases.
- Annual cost: Expect to spend $50–$150/year on batteries depending on size and usage.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries
Most modern hearing aids — both OTC and prescription — now offer rechargeable options. Built-in lithium-ion batteries charge via a case (similar to wireless earbuds) and provide 16–30 hours per charge depending on the device and usage.
Advantages
- No tiny batteries to handle — significant advantage for users with arthritis or reduced dexterity
- Predictable daily routine — charge overnight, wear all day
- Lower ongoing cost — no battery purchases
- No risk of running out unexpectedly during the day
- Better for the environment
Disadvantages
- Higher upfront cost (rechargeable models typically cost $200–$500 more)
- Battery capacity degrades over 2–3 years — eventually needs replacement
- Requires access to a charger — travel requires bringing the charging case
- If the battery dies during the day, you cannot simply swap in a fresh one
Rechargeable battery replacement
After 2–3 years of daily charging, lithium-ion batteries typically lose 20–30% of their original capacity. For prescription hearing aids, most manufacturers offer battery replacement services ($100–$300 per pair) that restore original battery life. For OTC aids, battery replacement services are less common — check with the manufacturer before purchasing.
Which should you choose?
Choose rechargeable if:
- You have arthritis, reduced dexterity, or vision difficulties
- You want the simplest possible daily routine

Choose disposable if:
