How rechargeable hearing aids work
Modern rechargeable hearing aids use built-in lithium-ion batteries — the same technology as smartphones and wireless earbuds. You place the aids in a charging case overnight (or during a nap), and they're ready for a full day of use. Most provide 16–30 hours of use per charge; some premium models with charging cases offer 50+ hours.
The battery is sealed inside the aid — you can't replace it yourself. When the battery degrades after 4–6 years, the manufacturer replaces it (usually for a fee). This is similar to how smartphones handle battery replacement.
How disposable battery aids work
Disposable zinc-air batteries come in four sizes: 10 (yellow tab, smallest), 312 (brown tab), 13 (orange tab), and 675 (blue tab, largest). Battery life ranges from 3–7 days for size 10 to 2–3 weeks for size 675, depending on the aid's power consumption and how much streaming you do.
Zinc-air batteries are activated by removing a colored tab that exposes the battery to air. Once activated, they drain whether you use the aid or not — so don't remove the tab until you're ready to use the battery.

The vast majority of new hearing aid sales are now rechargeable.

Disposable batteries make sense if you travel frequently to areas without reliable power, if you wear aids for very long days (18+ hours), or if you prefer the security of always having a backup. Some audiologists also recommend disposable batteries for patients who are prone to forgetting to charge devices.
