Hearing Aid Battery Problems: Causes, Fixes & Prevention
Short battery life, dead batteries that test fine, batteries that drain overnight — hearing aid battery problems are among the most common complaints. Most have straightforward fixes once you know the cause.

Battery draining faster than expected
The most common battery complaint is short life — batteries that should last 5–7 days only lasting 2–3. The most frequent causes:
Streaming too much audio
Bluetooth streaming is the single biggest battery drain on modern hearing aids. Streaming audio from your phone, TV streamer, or remote mic can cut battery life by 30–50%. If your battery life dropped after you started using Bluetooth features heavily, that's almost certainly the cause. Reduce streaming time or switch to a rechargeable model if you stream frequently.
High amplification settings
Hearing aids working harder — processing more sound, applying more amplification — use more power. If your hearing loss has progressed and your audiologist increased your amplification, expect shorter battery life. This is normal and expected.
Humid or hot environments
Heat and humidity accelerate battery discharge. If you live in a hot climate, work outdoors, or exercise frequently while wearing your hearing aids, your batteries will drain faster. Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place — never in a car glove box or bathroom.
Old or improperly stored batteries
Zinc-air batteries have a shelf life of 2–4 years from manufacture. Batteries stored in humid conditions or exposed to heat lose capacity before you even use them. Check the expiration date on your battery pack and buy from a retailer with high turnover.
Battery dies immediately after insertion
If a fresh battery dies within minutes or hours of insertion, the cause is almost always one of these:
Tab not removed long enough
Zinc-air batteries are activated by air — the small tab on the back seals the air holes. After removing the tab, wait at least 60 seconds before inserting the battery. This allows the battery to fully activate. Inserting immediately after tab removal is the most common cause of premature battery failure.
Wrong battery size
Hearing aid batteries come in four sizes: 10 (yellow), 312 (brown), 13 (orange), and 675 (blue). Using the wrong size — even if it physically fits — will cause immediate failure or damage the battery compartment. Check your hearing aid manual or ask your audiologist for the correct size.
Corroded battery contacts
If the metal contacts inside the battery compartment are corroded or dirty, the battery can't make a proper electrical connection. Open the battery door and inspect the contacts with a magnifying glass. Use a dry cotton swab to gently clean them. If corrosion is severe, take the hearing aid to your audiologist for professional cleaning.
Defective battery batch
Occasionally an entire pack of batteries is defective. Try a battery from a different pack or a different brand before assuming the hearing aid is faulty.
Rechargeable hearing aid not holding a charge
Rechargeable hearing aids use lithium-ion batteries that degrade over time — typically after 4–5 years of daily charging cycles. Signs the battery is degrading:
- Full charge no longer lasts a full day when it used to
- Hearing aid shuts off unexpectedly even when showing charge remaining
- Charging takes longer than it used to
Unlike disposable battery hearing aids, rechargeable batteries cannot be replaced at home — they require a manufacturer service. Contact your audiologist or the manufacturer's service center. Most manufacturers offer battery replacement service for $100–$200 per hearing aid, which is far less than replacing the device.
Check the charger first
Before assuming the battery is degraded, test the charger. Try a different power outlet, check the charging contacts for debris, and verify the hearing aid is seating properly in the charger. A faulty charger is a common cause of apparent battery problems in rechargeable aids.
Battery door won't close or opens unexpectedly
A battery door that won't close properly usually means the battery is slightly swollen (common in old or defective batteries), the wrong battery size is being used, or debris is blocking the compartment. Remove the battery, clean the compartment with a dry brush, and try a fresh battery of the correct size.
A battery door that opens on its own during wear usually indicates a worn hinge or latch mechanism. This requires professional repair — take the hearing aid to your audiologist or send it to the manufacturer's service center.
Tips to maximize battery life
- Open the battery door at night: When not wearing your hearing aids, open the battery door to break the circuit and stop current draw. This can extend battery life by 10–15%.
- Store batteries at room temperature: Avoid refrigerators (condensation damages batteries) and hot cars. A cool, dry drawer is ideal.
- Wait 60 seconds after tab removal: Always allow zinc-air batteries to fully activate before inserting.
- Use a dehumidifier: Moisture inside the hearing aid increases current draw. A nightly drying kit or electronic dehumidifier extends both battery and hearing aid life.
- Reduce streaming: Use Bluetooth streaming selectively if battery life is a priority.
- Buy in bulk from reputable sources: Fresh batteries from high-turnover retailers outperform old stock from discount stores.
When to see your audiologist
Contact your audiologist if battery problems persist after trying the above fixes, if the battery door is damaged, if you notice corrosion inside the battery compartment, or if a rechargeable hearing aid is no longer lasting through the day. Most battery-related issues are inexpensive to fix when caught early.
